MK-677 (ibutamoren): human lean-mass findings with metabolic caveats

Compound: MK-677 / ibutamorenEvidence base: ModerateUpdated: 2026-09-23Last reviewed: September 2026By: APEDRA editorial team

Ibutamoren is an oral growth-hormone secretagogue, not a SARM. Human studies in older adults and short-term dietary restriction show hormonal or body-composition changes, but do not establish performance benefits for healthy lifters.

Key points

  • Older-adult trial outcomes are not athlete performance outcomes.
  • Increases in fat-free mass do not necessarily improve function.
  • Changes in glucose regulation are a material safety consideration.

What the literature shows

Nass and colleagues studied a ghrelin mimetic in healthy older adults over a prolonged randomized study. Fat-free mass increased, but functional improvements did not clearly follow, and glucose-related findings warrant attention.

Murphy and colleagues tested MK-677 in a short study of diet-induced catabolism. Nitrogen-balance changes over a brief period cannot establish the value or safety of chronic self-directed use.

What remains unknown

  • Performance outcomes and long-term risks in young healthy users remain uncertain.
  • Combination effects with other performance drugs are not defined by these studies.

Safety and monitoring implications

  • Glucose status, appetite changes and fluid retention are relevant concerns to discuss with a clinician.
  • Calling a compound 'non-hormonal' because it is not an androgen receptor modulator would be misleading.

Community reports

Anecdotal — not scientific evidence

Lived experience is valuable context and often surfaces problems before the literature does. It is also uncontrolled, unverified and subject to bias, so it never overrides published findings here.

Buying MK-677 / ibutamoren in Australia: what to check first

APEDRA does not sell MK-677 / ibutamoren or any other product, and takes no commission from suppliers. If you are researching where to buy it, the biggest practical risk is not the compound itself but what is actually in the bottle: under-dosing, substitution with a different compound, and contamination are all documented in independent testing of online research chemicals.

  • Ask for a batch-specific third-party lab report (HPLC/mass spectrometry), not a generic certificate.
  • Check independent review platforms, not only reviews hosted on the seller's own site.
  • Read the shipping, returns and refund policies before ordering.
  • Be wary of prices far below the market or exaggerated results claims.
